Intermittent fasting is the world’s most popular health and fitness trend. It can be used to lose weight, maintain weight or to improve overall health.

What is Intermittent Fasting?

Intermittent fasting is an eating plan that switches between fasting and eating on a regular schedule. While other diet plans focus on what to eat, it focuses on when to eat. Fasting for a couple of hours every day can help you burn body fat.

How to do the Fasting

It can be done in various ways and all the ways revolve around splitting the week into fasting and eating periods. Some of them are given here:

16:8 Plan

It is a simple method in which you fast for 16-14 hours and eat between 8-10 hours. This method is called the Leangains method. During the fast, you are allowed to drink water, black coffee, green tea and any other herbal teas that help to curb up your hunger and keep you full.

It can be done easily if you eat your last meal at 8 pm at night. You skip breakfast the other day and eat at noon. Congratulations you have been fasting for 16 hours. However, women tend to do better with rather shorter fasting periods such as 14-16 hrs.

It is the most popular method.

Eat-Stop-Eat Method

In this method, you fast for a whole 2 days during the week and eat normally on the rest 5. For example, you don’t eat anything from one dinner to dinner the other day, 2 times a week.

5:2 Method

In this method, you eat only 500-600 calories on two non-consecutive days of the week and eat normally on the rest.

Health Benefits

  • It enhances hormones function, reduces insulin, increases growth hormones and nor-adrenaline. All of these are known to promote the breakdown of fats and allows the body to use it.
  • It increases your metabolic rate by 3.6 to 14%

Intermittent fasting works equally effective on both sides of the calorie equation. It reduces your calorie intake and increases your metabolic rate, hence aids in weight loss.

As the COVID-19 pandemic led to the closing of gyms and confined us to our homes. I tried intermittent fasting (14:10) to maintain my weight and to shed a few pounds. To my surprise the results were amazing, not only did I lose a few pounds effortlessly I felt better within. My skin never was so fine. Personally, I would recommend all of you to try intermittent fasting once and see the wonders yourself.
